September Issues (AW16)

September Issues (AW16) at Squiggle Space explores the poetic transformation of commodities into artworks and the flux of financial and cultural value in this process.

September Issues (AW16) was co-curated by Yarran Gatsby and Anna May Kirk

Squiggle Space is a unused space reclaimed for the purpose of experimental practice on Oxford St with a history of functioning as a dual store front. September Issues (AW16) will address the commercial history of this site as a metaphor for the physical and metaphysical value ascribed to the thresholds of gallery and art spaces, questioning the audience’s perception of artworks through a capitalist consumer eye. Artists; Rainbow Chan, Harrison Witsey, Grace Blake, Fraser Anderson, Danielle Karlikoff, Oscar Capezio, Lily Golightly and L/HT/T/TT collective will be navigating the value of the ‘original’ and the ‘fake’, analysing artists innate ability to create and manipulate cultural, financial and social value through transformation of materials that have been impregnated by society as ‘valuable’ or worthless into works of art. In reimagining a space historically prescribed as a commercial capitalist reservoir space, assemblages of art commodities in this commercial space create new metaphors and thus new meaning and value.
